Rockdale Community Fun Run & Walk
Posted Sunday 25 May 2008 by Michael Gentle

This event could not be conducted successfully without the organisational skills of
Kim Delaney
,
Chris Mullen
,
Stephanie & David Beck
,
Kylie Mulholland
and the transport help from
Gary Young
, the course set up help from Kim, Chris,
John Irvine
,
Gary Young
,
Leigh & Ian Nipperess
,
John Momi
and every other volunteer that helped us with "on course" marshall jobs and / or in the finish area. So all give yourselves a "pat on the back" as we lost no competitors.

The course was clearly flagged, tree roots marked, some sandy sections and sealed pathways. So our racers, joggers and walkers had a varied surface on beachfront parklands.

This year we had more support from various sections of St. George Hospital, physiotherapist, nurses, cardiac care and for the first time patients from the stroke rehabilitation centre. A few of them were determined to make their way around the 1km walk, but with great determination, grit and courage, some said, "no we are going to go the whole 5km", they may have been last to finish, but received a great reception.

The Knights of St. George Heart Association were in attendance with
Dr David Horton
,
Dr Matthew Horton
and families, who competed in the walk. Most of their patients or those who have heart bypass surgery become members of the "Zipper Club" . We had a 9 year old Zipper Club runner with
Mathew Simpson
competing.

We also had two visually impaired athletes compete,
David Munro
, and
Nathan Johnston
who is helped by a "pilot" and in this case it was
Ally Nash
. The youngest finisher was a 6 week old baby who Mum carried the distance. The run was initiated 7 years ago by
Cr Shaoquett Moselman
and he was on hand to start the race. Also in the run were
Cr Lisa De Leau
,
Cr Liz Barlow
and families. They presented the trophies to section winners. The RCC organisational skills were provided by
Michelle Callinan
. RCC funds this community event to support citizens in a healthy activity and to support local charities.

St John Ambulance were in attendance for your safety and the local Scout group provided the sausage sandwich BBQ after the run. Groups from Lafarge Plasterboard, Qantas Runners, Brighton Athletic Club, and Step into Life Sans Souci competed.

We also received sponsorship from
The Athletes Foot Hurstville
- thank you
Jo & Brian Moro
.

Novice Day 2008
Posted Saturday 26 Apr 2008 by Michael Gentle

It was a superb effort by all of our volunteers as every person that helped in some way, contributed to the successful organisation of this important event on our calendar.

  • David Beck
as Event Manager had details of the total area setting and volunteer lists organised.
  • Our "Bob the Builder" crew of
    Kim Delaney
    &
    Chris Mullen
with lots of helpers had the area completely set out well in advance of the race starting times.
  • The registration set up made entering a breeze - so simple, watch others adapt it.
  • We thank
    Jim Gallagher
and his family for attending and being BBQ managers. It is only 7 weeks since Jim had major heart surgery.
  • Our course markers did a super job and no one got lost or caught in the muddy sections.
  • Cr
    Georgina Soukoulis
made a special effort to attend as it is Greek New Year when families get together.
  • We thank
    Brian Moro
    of
    Athletes Foot Hurstville
for attending and giving $1,000 value in vouchers as prizes.
Take a bow everyone, you were superb.
