Commonwealth Games Nomination
Posted Monday 19 May 2014 by Michael Gentle

The Commonwealth Games is likely to welcome a full quota of Australian marathoners, with Athletics Australia today nominating a further four athletes including
Ben St Lawrence
to the Australian Commonwealth Games Association for selection to compete in the event in Glasgow (SCO).

Set to start together with an already confirmed 45 athletes
if officially selected
, the quartet of Sarah Klein (Vic), Melanie Panayiotou (Qld), Michael Shelley (Qld) and Liam Adams (Vic) join Lara Tamsett (NSW, 10,000m),
Ben St Lawrence
(NSW) and Harry Summers (NSW) on the latest nominee list, with the latter three to race in the 10,000m.

"The Qualification Period for the marathon and the 10,000m closed last weekend, and in accordance with the Selection Policy the Athletics Australia Selectors have met and determined that seven new athletes should be nominated for selection. This is a great result, and continues the growth of what is shaping into a very big athletics team for Glasgow," Dion Russell, the Athletics Australia Chairman of Selectors, said.

"The ability of Australia to field as many marathon runners as we can is very positive news, and this is also the case for the men's 10,000m with two new athletes announced today to compete alongside the already selected Collis Birmingham."

In the 10,000m, St Lawrence boasted an A-Standard to earn his consideration, while Summers ran 28:16.05 in the Selection Trial in December to lay claim to the next best qualifier. The duo will join Birmingham (Vic) in the race.

Well done Ben, another well deserved recognition.

IAAF World Relays
Posted Tuesday 13 May 2014 by Michael Gentle

A big team of 31 athletes that includes a mix of regular Australian Flame representatives including Collis Birmingham, Zoe Buckman, Tristan Thomas, Jeff Riseley and John Steffensen as well as young talents such as Morgan Mitchell and
Bridey Delaney
has been selected by Athletics Australia to take part in the inaugural IAAF World Relays in The Bahamas in May.

Athletics Australia Chairman of Selectors Dion Russell said the mix of familiar faces and promising youngsters was a positive.

"We are pleased to have a mix of experienced international level athletes as well as some emerging talented athletes in the team," said Russell. "We've been able to select teams for each of the relay events which maximises providing major Championship experience for our athletes. At this stage it looks like 48 countries will be sending teams to The Bahamas."

"In exercising our discretion the Selectors opted for a larger squad for the distance relays to ensure we had coverage for both the 4x800m and 4x1500m events. With the top eight teams in the 4x100m and 4x400m automatically qualifying for the 2015 IAAF World Championships this is a great opportunity for Australia to try and secure a qualification and assist in the planning for Beijing next year."

"As per the Policy, the Selectors took into account performances throughout the Australian domestic season – more than half of the selected team are medallists from the Australian Athletics Championships just three weeks ago."

Bridey Delaney
has been selected to compete in the 4x800m and 4x1500m squads. Best wishes to Bridey for a great run.
