Christmas Mile

Although Albie was not with us to celebrate, we know in spirit he was with us and he would have loved seeing the generosity that was provided on the morning. Whether it was those who donated raffle prizes, the people who came to contest the annual tomato competition, everyone who came to compete or assist in the running of this event, and all those who came to cheer on and support, Albie would have been very happy that this great event went ahead with so many attending.
I would like to thank everyone who helped support this wonderful event, with big cheers to Nola and all of the family for once again hosting the Christmas Mile.
Nola and the family are keen to keep this wonderful event going that helps raise needed funds for our up and coming junior members.

was given the honour of starting the event and under calm and mild conditions we found ourselves off and running, walking or a bit of both on the day.This year's race saw some close racing up front with

, while in the women's results we saw Stephanie Beck
just out kick Dannielle Ferraro
to the finish for first female. The day's handicap winner was Bryce England who narrowly beat Chris Maver by a hundredth of a second. That gave him the first Albie Thomas Christmas mile handicap trophy with "Run Tall" inscribed at the bottom; one of Albie's known keen calls.The annual tomato contest was claimed by

also taking home the inaugural Tomato contest trophy after Chief Judge Brian Langton
selected her tomato as the most delicious tomato on the morning.Although Albie was not with us to celebrate, we know in spirit he was with us and he would have loved seeing the generosity that was provided on the morning. Australian All Schools Championship

The Club's throwers led the way in Townsville, claiming national records and titles at the Australian All Schools Championship. Congratulations to coach Ray Russell and his athletes.
Great efforts were also recorded by

who eclipsed the U16 Club Record as well as the Australian Record previously held by Paletina Lemi in winning the U16 shot put.Matthew Rees
who broke his existing U18 Club Record while winning the U18 javelin throw.Mitchell Pepper
who broke his own U16 Club Record while claiming victory in the U16 discus throw and finished 4th in the U16 shot put.Pita Toamotu

Albie Thomas has been a member of St George District Athletic Club since 1951 where he first competed in the Tuesday night track & field competition at Hurstville Oval.
They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn.
With the going down of the sun
And in the morning we will remember them.
Lest We Forget
Some highlights of Albie's stellar career in athletics include:
Competing in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games;
Setting a new 3 mile World Record of 13m 10.8s on 9 July 1958;
Competing in the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games;
Setting a new 2 mile World Record of 8m 32s on 7 August 1958;
Competing in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games;
Competing in the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games;
Competing in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
In 1963 Albie earned the rare honour of being the NSW Champion for 1 Mile, 3 Miles and Marathon! A true champion over all distances.
Albie was awarded an Order Of Australia Medal, Australian Sports Medal, Centenary Medal and has been admitted to the NSW Government Hall Of Champions. He was awarded a Merit Award and conferred with Life Membership of St George District Athletics Club.
Our thoughts are with his wife Nola, daughters Robyn and Patricia, and their families including grand children Thomas, Mark, Liam and Mathew.

Vale Basil Dickinson

Today we hear the sad news that Basil Dickinson has passed away. Basil was the oldest surviving Olympian and a member of the St George Club.
He was known as a real gentleman and kept fond memories of competing for the club. He was always keen to hear of any news from our members and remained in contact with Albie and Nola.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family.
