NSW Masters Championships

While our club winter cross country season kicked off to a fine start last Saturday, SGDAC also had five athletes compete in the NSW Masters Championships held over the weekend at The Crest, Bankstown. This was the final track & field event for the 2008-09 NSW season and resulted in some great performances by our club members.

Belinda Martin
backed up with a gold medal performance in the Women's 5000m (35-39), and Frank Scorzelli
backed up to claim silver in the Men's 5000m (60-64). Dale Jones
achieved two seasons-best times in the Men's 800m (50-54) and Men's 1500m (50-54) to pick up two bronze medals. It was good to see Mendo Stojkovski
competing alongside Dale in both the 800m and 1500m events, while our evergreen Vilis Gravitis
finished fifth in the Men's 800m (65-69).A great end to a magnificent track and field season for SGDAC.
New Club Records

Laura Flynn
has set a new Pole Vault club record of 2.80m in the Women's Open, Under 20 and Under 18 categories in the recent National Championships in Brisbane.This eclipses the previous club record of 2.70m that Laura equalled last month. Congratulations from everyone at St George.
National Open & AWD Championships

The 2009 National Open & AWD Championships have been held at QEII Stadium in Brisbane from 19-21 March. St George has been represented by several athletes, and some great results have been achieved.

placed second in the Women's U18 Triple Jump and was a member of the NSW team that finished third in the Women's U18 4x100m Relay; Laura Flynn
finished third in Women's U18 Pole Vault; Bridey Delaney
claimed third place in the Open Women's 1500m; and Alix Kennedy
was third in the Women's Discus Throw U18.Congratulations also to

The weekend saw the final Allcomers event for the 2008-09 track & field season. There were some excellent performances to cap off a great season for many of the St George athletes.
Next week the National Championships are taking place in Brisbane from Thursday to Saturday; while many of our younger athletes will be competing in the State LA Championships at SOPAC from Friday night to Sunday.
The 87th Australian Athletics Championships and Selection Trials will incorporate the Australian Open & U20 Combined Events Championships and the Australian Interstate Youth (U18) Match. The event will serve as the selection trials for the Australian team to compete at this year's world championships to be held in Berlin, Germany in August. As such, all Australian athletes will be determined to perform to the best of their ability and to book their ticket to Germany.
Christopher Barakat
cracked a season's best, winning the Men's All Grades 110m Hurdles. Riley Delaney
ran a PB for 800m, placing second in the C Grade 800m. Paul Windridge
ran well in both the 800m and 100m events, while young member Scott Manns

On 28 February at the Sydney Track Classic Bridey broke her existing Senior Women's Club Record for 800m, setting a new mark of 2:05.49.
This was followed on March 3 at the World Athletics Tour Melbourne with a new Senior Women's Club Record for 1500m of 4:14.83, which smashed her previous Club Record of 4:17.66.
